The video for Usher's single, "Love in This Club," starts out as usual as any other hip-hop video. The singer begins sitting alone in an unknown club that features some mood lighting like any club you expect to see Usher in. Then, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out Sony Cell Phones. An attractive woman's photo comes into view on the screen of the Sony Cell Phone. Then, just seconds later, she is there in person. From that point on the video is like any other hip-hop video. But is this becoming the norm, mixing our celebrities with the best and newest technology on the market? It certainly seems that way.

The combination of Usher and Sony Cell Phones is certainly not the first, nor is it the last we will see. We've seen Boost Mobile mix it up with Kanye West, Ludacris and the Game all in a single commercial. We've also seen them pair up with Jermaine Dupri, Young Jeezy and Mickey Avalon in the sequel to that commercial. There's probably unlocked gsm cell phones commercials with rap stars, too. The difference here is that the boost mobile commercials are advertisements so it is obivous to discern that it isn't necessarily something that the rap stars and producers necessarily endorse in real life. With Usher and Sony Cell Phones it's different.

We see Usher, in his music video, using a Sony Ericsson Cell Phone, meaning he may actually endorse that product. While it is still an advertisement since Sony Cell Phones likely had to pay to get into the video, it has a more subtle effect on the viewer. In my opinion, a viewer is much more likely to say "Hey, this guy must really like Sony Cell Phones" due to a music video than a commercial. A commercial is simply too obvious a plug, but when the roles are reversed it is not so easy to see.

Celebrity endorsements are nothing new. But cleverly placing your product within a celebrities music video, website, or whatever other possibilities are out there, seems like a new promising direction for advertising. So I will certainly expect to see more of it. Imagine Unlocked GSM Cell Phones cleverly placed throughout celebrity websites! And hey, who's to say that Usher doesn't like Sony Cell Phones? He definitely has a cell phone like everyone else out there, so why is it so hard to believe he chooses a particular brand just like the rest of us? Just remember to get the product that fits you best, not the product that fits a celebrity well.
